IRS PTIN Renewal

All paid tax return preparers are required to have a current year PTIN from the IRS. PTINs must be renewed by 12/31 each year in order to prepare returns for the next calendar year (i.e. You must renew your PTIN by 12/31/13 to prepare tax returns from 1/1/14 to 12/31/14).

Note: You must renew your PTIN through the IRS; cannot renew your PTIN for you.

New York tax preparers must have a valid current year PTIN in

addition to being registered as a tax preparer with the New York Department of Taxation and Finance.

The easiest way to renew your PTIN is online via the IRS website at

To renew your PTIN, you should have the following information available:

  • Personal Information (name, mailing address, date of birth)
  • Business Information (name, mailing address, telephone number)
  • Explanations for felony convictions (if any)
  • Explanations for problems with your U.S. individual or business tax liabilities
  • Credit or debit card for the $63.00 renewal fee
  • If applicable, your supervisor’s PTIN
  • If applicable, any US-based professional certification information (CPA, EA, attorney, etc.)

When renewing ourselves, the process took about 10 minutes and we received a confirmation email from the IRS approximately 24 hours later.
